Replacing a doorknob: match the door before choosing hardware

Check the exact product guide, door thickness, backset, existing bore preparation, handing and intended function before buying a replacement doorknob or lever.

Before buying a replacement doorknob or lever, match the exact product's instructions to the door's thickness, backset and existing hole preparation. Then check handing, intended function, trim fit and the door's condition. A similar shape or finish does not establish compatibility, and a new knob may not solve an existing alignment problem.

1. Start with the exact product and instructions

Save the brand, model, product link and installation guide for the replacement you are considering. Check the supplied latch and trim options, supported door preparation and any model-specific requirements before ordering. Keep existing hardware working while you gather information; you do not need to dismantle a functioning entry just to start a shopping checklist.

Schlage's manuals and templates directory is one manufacturer's route to product instructions. Use the current guide for your exact model and region, rather than treating a general “standard door” description or another brand's measurements as approval.

2. Record thickness, backset and bore preparation

Schlage's door-hardware glossary defines backset as the distance from the door edge to the center line of the cross-bore. The cross-bore is the main hole through the door face; the edge or latch bore approaches it from the door edge. These are different measurements.

  • Door thickness: measure across the door edge with the door safely held open, keeping fingers clear of hinges and closing surfaces.
  • Backset: record the edge-to-cross-bore-center distance following the maker's diagram. If installed trim hides the necessary reference, mark it unverified instead of guessing.
  • Cross-bore and edge preparation: use reliable existing records or measurements already available from an appropriately assessed opening. Trim diameter is not bore diameter. Do not remove working hardware or enlarge holes solely to fill in this list.

Write the units and mark approximate or unknown values. Schlage's door-preparation checklist treats thickness, backset, cross-bore and latch bore as separate fit checks and notes that mismatched preparation can require additional work. This guide does not give one set of dimensions for every knob, door or manufacturer. Compare each actual measurement with your chosen product's instructions.

3. Check handing and the function you need

For a lever or any handed product, follow that manufacturer's viewpoint and diagram to record hinge side and swing. Schlage's glossary explains that handing concerns the door's swing direction. Do not assume every lever is reversible or transfer a left/right label without checking how the maker defines it.

Identify the intended use—such as a passage handle for a hall or closet, a bedroom/bath privacy function, or the specified entry function—and compare the exact product description. A decorative, non-latching pull is not interchangeable with a working latch set. This checklist addresses fit and use, not security performance, key compatibility or access-control setup.

4. Note what the new hardware must meet

Photograph the visible trim, door edge and frame contact area privately, without including keys, codes, house numbers or unrelated personal details. Note the faceplate shape and visible finish outline so the proposed trim and supplied options can be reviewed. A larger decorative plate may cover an outline but does not establish that the underlying preparation fits.

Record sticking, rubbing, loose components or the need to lift or push the door during normal use. Do not deliberately recreate a jam. Cracks, warping, unusual preparation, special-purpose doors or uncertain alignment need appropriate assessment before modification. Keep a rental property's actual approval requirements with the plan; our renter-permission checklist can help organize that request.

5. Copy a short compatibility note

  • Door location and intended hardware function
  • Exact replacement model, product link and manual
  • Door thickness, backset and units
  • Verified cross-bore/edge preparation, or unknown
  • Maker-defined handing and supplied latch/faceplate options
  • Visible trim outline, existing symptoms and any permission requirements

Raleigh and Triangle homeowners can prepare this note themselves before deciding whether the work is a suitable DIY project. Leave uncertain preparation and specialist work for an appropriate professional. If you want optional help, PR Handyman Services handles small home projects; send the details through Request an estimate to confirm whether this particular replacement is within scope. The request does not confirm compatibility, security performance, price or availability. Our photo guide explains how to share useful project details privately.
