A patio set can arrive in several cartons, with similar-looking bolts and instructions tucked into just one box. Getting organized before assembly helps you spot missing pieces early and keeps the work from taking over your outdoor space.

For Raleigh and Triangle homeowners preparing for a delivery or assembly visit, the useful questions are straightforward: Do you have the complete product? Is the work area ready? What does the manufacturer require before anyone uses it?

Save the exact product information

Keep the order confirmation, model number, assembly manual and care instructions together. A collection name alone may cover several chairs, tables and configurations. Check that the manual matches the item and version you received.

Read the entire manual before starting. Look for the parts list, required tools, lifting instructions, assembly sequence and any warnings. Manufacturer instructions should guide the build; a video for a similar-looking set is not a substitute. POLYWOOD's assembly resources, for example, provide product-specific instructions and a replacement-hardware request route.

If you still need to check the layout or delivery route, start with our furniture measurement guide. Then return to the assembly preparations below.

Check the delivery without losing the small parts

Before opening any carton for an assembly visit, confirm the assembler’s unpacking preferences. Leave boxes sealed if requested, and keep each label with its item. You can compare the delivered carton count with the order information and photograph packaging damage while cartons remain closed.

When unpacking has been agreed and the stable workspace below is ready, follow the product’s unpacking instructions. Open cartons carefully, keeping cutting tools away from cushions, straps and finished surfaces. Photograph any visible product damage before discarding anything.

Work through the parts list one carton at a time. Keep each item's hardware separate in labeled containers. Several bolts can look nearly identical while differing in length; mixing them makes the instructions harder to follow.

Keep packaging until you have accounted for the parts and checked the retailer's return instructions. If a structural piece is cracked, hardware is missing or the contents do not match the manual, stop and contact the seller or manufacturer. Do not substitute a convenient screw or drill a new hole to make an uncertain part fit.

Prepare a stable workspace

Clear a firm, dry work area with enough room for the assembly steps and the people helping. Protect finished pieces with a clean surface covering suited to the job. Avoid working directly in grass or gravel, where small hardware can disappear and frames may sit unevenly.

Keep doors, steps and walkways clear. Put tools, plastic bags and loose fasteners out of reach of children and pets. Arrange help for heavy or awkward pieces rather than attempting a lift alone.

Look over the intended placement area from a safe position. A loose deck board, unstable railing or questionable support needs assessment before it becomes part of the project. Furniture assembly does not establish whether a deck can carry a particular load. Ask an appropriately qualified professional about structural concerns.

Check the forecast before outdoor work. If you hear thunder, move into a substantial enclosed building with wiring or plumbing, or an enclosed metal-topped vehicle with the windows up. The National Weather Service advises waiting at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before returning outside.

Separate furniture from accessories and structures

An umbrella, hanging chair, gazebo or pergola has its own installation requirements. A table's umbrella hole does not tell you which base, ballast or mounting arrangement the umbrella needs. Confirm the exact compatible system in the umbrella's instructions before buying accessories.

Follow the product's wind and storage warnings. For example, IKEA's TVETÖ instructions say to fold that umbrella when it is not in use and not to use it in windy conditions. Do not treat one model's specifications as a rule for every umbrella.

Keep structural anchoring, electrical additions and gas connections outside a basic furniture-assembly plan unless the appropriate qualified specialist has reviewed them.

Make a care plan before the first use

Keep the manual after the boxes are gone. Confirm the finished item is assembled as directed, stable and free of damaged parts before use. Do not try to correct a wobble by overtightening every fastener; follow the product's adjustment instructions.

Maintenance varies by material and model. IKEA's NÄMMARÖ chair guidance, for instance, calls for mild soapy cleaning, drying, appropriate protection in storage and re-tightening screws at least once per season. Use your own item's care schedule rather than applying the same cleaner, coating or tightening routine to every outdoor piece.

Quick questions

Should I unpack everything before an assembly visit?

Ask first. Confirming the carton count and photographing damage is useful, but keeping labels and hardware with the correct item matters more than having every box open.

What should I send for an estimate?

Send the product link or manual, item and carton counts, and photos of the intended area and access route. Mention stairs, heavy pieces and any missing parts.

Can several outdoor items be assembled together?

List each item so the scope can be reviewed. PR Handyman Services offers patio and yard assembly around Raleigh and the Triangle. Request an estimate with the details so Angel can confirm the work and next steps.
